    Science and Technology is rapidly developing and greatly changing how we as humans perceive the world. But does all this technological advancement really has a limit? Is there a point or a time when all this will come to an end. In all areas of study I’m sure everybody can say a thing or two about how things have changed for the better and maybe for the worse.

    In all these areas of study, be it Engineering, Medicine, Architectural or the Sciences there is one field of study that transcends all these areas and has an application in practically every field: Nanotechnology. It has been around for a long time but recent developments has really hyped it up to the extent that virtually anything is possible with it right now, well theoretically that is. Although Nanotechnology promises to be the future of science and technology not many people know that much about it.

    You might have watched the pilot edition of Knight Rider released in 2008.My guess is when you saw what the car could do you were like wow. Yeah I know it is wow. Wondering what exactly makes that car, KIT tick. Among a host of others Nanotechnology is the most prominent. How the car could change color and model. And yes the other amazing part how the Bullet Proof SUV collided into the car and got scrambled while the car did not even scratch. That is all Nanotechnology.

    A little History

    Richard Feynman, a Physicist and future Nobel Prize winner in December 29, 1959 was the first person to give a lecture at an American Physical Society meeting at Caltech on the topic “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom”. This lecture was basically about miniaturization and how it could be applied to make smaller but more powerful devices.
    The term Nanotechnology however was coined by Dr. K Eric Drexler in 1986, when he wrote “Engines of Creation: The Coming Era of Nanotechnology”“which in fact is considered the first book on Nanotechnology.

    Just How Small Is “Nano”

    To be able to understand how small the Nano scale is lets look at the following.
    1. Nanometer is 1billionth of a meter, that is 10-9 m which is smaller than the wavelength of light
    2. The Head of a pin is 1mm=1,000,000nm
    3. A Red blood cell is 2.5 micrometers=2,500nm
    Now just how small is that? Imagine working with particles this small and how much smaller and stronger we could make things like cars, Planes and Submarines.

    What Can Nanotechnology be used for

    Why is Nanotechnology receiving all this hype? Well as we said earlier on, Nanotechnology cuts across almost all areas of study. It would surprise you to know the kind of application Nanotechnology promises and which areas it is already being used in.
    Let’s now look at some application

    Sunscreen Lotions - Many sunscreens contain nanoparticles of zinc oxide or titanium oxide. Older sunscreen formulas use larger particles, which is what gives most sunscreens their whitish color. Smaller particles are less visible, meaning that when you rub the sunscreen into your skin, it doesn't give you a whitish tinge.

    Self-cleaning glass - A company called Pilkington offers a product they call Activ Glass, which uses nanoparticles to make the glass photocatalytic and hydrophilic. The photocatalytic effect means that when UV radiation from light hits the glass, nanoparticles become energized and begin to break down and loosen organic molecules on the glass (in other words, dirt). Hydrophilic means that when water makes contact with the glass, it spreads across the glass evenly, which helps wash the glass clean.

    Clothing - Scientists are using nanoparticles to enhance your clothing. By coating fabrics with a thin layer of zinc oxide nanoparticles, manufacturers can create clothes that give better protection from UV radiation. Some clothes have nanoparticles in the form of little hairs or whiskers that help repel water and other materials, making the clothing stain-resistant.

    Scratch-resistant coatings - Engineers discovered that adding aluminum silicate nanoparticles to scratch-resistant polymer coatings made the coatings more effective, increasing resistance to chipping and scratching. Scratch-resistant coatings are common on everything from cars to eyeglass lenses.

    Antimicrobial bandages - Scientist Robert Burrell created a process to manufacture antibacterial bandages using nanoparticles of silver. Silver ions block microbes' cellular respiration [source: Burnsurgery.org]. In other words, silver smothers harmful cells, killing them.

    Swimming pool cleaners and disinfectants - EnviroSystems, Inc. developed a mixture (called a nanoemulsion) of nano-sized oil drops mixed with a bactericide. The oil particles adhere to bacteria, making the delivery of the bactericide more efficient and effective.

    More and more is being done everyday and you could be using products that are made from Nanotechnology without knowing it.Wrinkle-resistant fabrics, deep-penetrating cosmetics, liquid crystal displays (LCD) and other devices using nanotechnology are already on the market.

    What to Expect in the Future

    Ever watched Star Trek? Well if you have you would have noticed that machines called Replicators can produce practically any object with weapons being an example. This can be achieved by the properties of atoms and molecules being able to stick together due to the fact that they have complementary shapes that lock together or simply attract each other. As millions of these atoms are combined by a machine called the nanomachine, a specific product if formed.

    Intel Is currently working on flexible IC’s but that is another topic for another day. However the future looks bright for microprocessors as nanochips promise smaller yet more efficient chips for computers and other devices.

    Virtually any elctrical component can be “Nanorized” with greater efficiency. Capacitors and the like.

    Is It all Safe With Nanotechnology

    Like every technology Nanotechnology has its own problems. The moral and environmental implication of the technology is something that many people are really making a lot of noise about.

    For example the use of nanorobots that can be used to give humans super abilities is an issue with grave moral implications that many argue about.

    Researchers have discovered that silver nanoparticles used in socks to reduce foot odor when washed release into the drains have possible negative consequences. Silver nanoparticles, which are bacteriostatic, may then destroy beneficial bacteria which are important for breaking down organic matter in waste treatment plants or farms.

    A study at the University of Rochester found that when rats breathed in nanoparticles, the particles settled in the brain and lungs, which lead to significant increases in biomarkers for inflammation and stress response.

    These are a few negatives of nanotechnology but what about the positives. I guess it is up to us to look at both sides and look at how best to take advantage of the technology and make the best out of it. Check out howstuffworks.com for more info on this issue

    The term Google has come to be synonymous with surfing the internet for information. So an expression like “I am going to Google it” is not uncommon. I remember just some few years back Google were in a court case with a firm that had apparently listed the registered trademark name of Google to mean something like searching online for information in a dictionary. Well I guess you could say that Google are a victim of their own success. But is Google all about search.

    A Brief History

    In 1996, Google started out as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two Ph.D. students at Stanford University. In 1998, Page and Brin — while continuing to perfect their technology — bought a terabyte of disks at bargain prices and built their own computer housings in Page's dorm room, which became Google's first data center. In 1999, the beta logo came off the Google Web site. Since then Google has expanded its search technology into blogging, mapping, shopping, research and more. In fact, Google now has so many services it's hard to keep them straight.     It would surprise you to know that Google is involved in a lot of products and is not just a search engine. Over 100 products have been released or are in testing and yet to be officially launched.

    Web search engine, which is Google's core product. It was the company's first creation, coming out of beta on September 21, 1999, and remains their most popular and famous service. It receives 1 billion requests a day and is the most used search engine on the Internet.

    (Also known as Google Mail) Free Webmail IMAP and POP e-mail service provided by Google, known for its abundant storage and advanced interface. It was first released in an invitation-only form on April 1, 2004. Mobile access and Google Talk integration is also featured

    YouTube
    Popular free video sharing Web site which lets users upload, view, and share video clips. In October 2006, Google, Inc., announced that it had reached a deal to acquire the company for $1.65 billion USD in Google's stock. The deal closed on 13 November 2006.

    Earth
    Virtual globe that uses satellite imagery, aerial photography and GIS over a 3D globe.

    Desktop
    Desktop search application, that indexes e-mails, documents, music, photos, chats, Web history and other files. It allows the installation of Google Gagdets.

  • Blu-ray Disc

    In our previous issue we looked at HD DVD’s. In this issue however we would be looking at Blu-ray. Not many people have heard of this technology much more used it before. Blu-ray also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD) and I bet has got some of you asking what it is. Hmm, Blu-ray disc is like the new kid on the block. A new standard in data and high-definition video storage.

    Why Blu-ray is better?

    Well for one Blu-ray’s storage capacity is 5times that of traditional DVD’s and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. That is not all; Blu-ray is designed to be extensible which means that in the future more layers can be added to increase its storage capacity to 100GB-200GB (25GB per layer). Yes as much as 200GB is possible with Blu-ray just on one disc. Now imagine this, unlike traditional DVD’s with a 50GB Blu-ray, Up to 9hours of High- Definition (HD) Video and 23hours of Standard Definition (SD), can be stored on just one disc.

    Also with Blu-ray, data and video storage is much better, looking at the fact the Blue-Violet laser which is what is used to read and write data is much more precise. Traditional DVD’s use near infra-red laser’s which has a wavelength of about 650nm compared with the much shorter wavelength of Blu-ray which is 405nm.
    OK now that I have your interest peaked up; let’s take a critical look at Blu-ray.

    Why the name Blu ray?

    The name Blu-ray is derived from the technology itself, that is how it makes use of blue- violet laser to read and write data. According to the Blu-ray Disc Association the spelling of "Blu-ray" is not a mistake; the character "e" was intentionally left out so the term could be registered as a trademark.

    A critical Look at Blu-ray

    Blu-ray is soon to become an industry standard. With the battle between it and HD DVD now over Blu-ray is now the official Disc standard on the market. Yes there was a format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD manufactured by Toshiba, but more of that in the next issue.     High-Definition DVD (HD DVD) is basically a DVD with much more features. The quality of the audio and video is much more advanced and richer than a traditional DVD. It is a high density optical disc designed primarily by Toshiba and NEC to be the successor to the DVD format. It was designed to store High-Definition video and data. HD DVD is simply great and is no surprise that Hollywood loves HD DVD so much. The following would explain why;

    So what makes HD DVD so great that it would have Hollywood talking about it? Let’s now take a look at the features of HD DVD.

    Features of the HD DVD
    HD-DVD uses a blue-violet laser with a wavelength of 405nm instead of the red lasers used by DVD with a wavelength of 650nm.What this means is that it can store more data than traditional DVD’s. Why the change in laser color is important here is that with the blue-violet laser that has a shorter wavelength more data can be stored on a small area since the HD DVD pits are smaller and arranged closely together.

    HD DVD Players
    HD-DVD players hit the market on April 18, 2006, two months before the first Blu-ray player hit the U.S. market in June 2006.

    If you are thinking of buying HD DVD player and worried about compatibility problems well don’t be. Most of the HD DVD players are backward compatible with DVD’s which means that they can play both DVD and HD DVD’s.

    HD DVD is a great technology however it has not come to stay since its success has been shortly lived. A much more potent competitor, Blu-ray has taken over and is now the official standard of optical disk on the market and is going to take over the market from DVD’s.

  • Wibree

    Most of you have heard about Bluetooth and more than likely have had the opportunity to use it. But what about Wibree, yes Wibree. This is a new technology that was introduced by NOKIA last year in October. It is a radio based technology that works like Bluetooth.

    Many tech pundits have argued out the need for Wibree, or if Wibree would even survive the market looking at the fact that there are many of such radio technologies on the market including Zigbee.

    Why Wibree
    Before we look at the advantages that Wibree brings let us first take a close look at Wibree.

    Wibree was designed as a compliment technology and not a competitor to Bluetooth. What that means is that it has been designed to integrate with Bluetooth and hence a single chip can be used for both Bluetooth and Wibree without the need for separate chips installed in a device to be able to use either. Wibree also comes alone on other kinds of chips. Some new phones specifically, NOKIA have this technology built into them. The symbol above is the registered trademark of Wibree and hence any phone you see with this symbol has Wibree incorporated into it.


    The Main Advantages

    1. The most important reason for the development of Wibree is its very low power consumption. Most of you who have used a Bluetooth devices would have noticed that it drains a lot of power. Now this can be very disadvantageous in that for small devices that make use of Bluetooth that run on batteries or any other such power it requires that battery be changed or charged very often. For devices whose batteries cannot be changed, the cost of using the device becomes a problem.

    With Wibree this problem can be greatly overcome since Wibree uses only about a tenth(1/10th) the power consumed by Bluetooth [the real power consumption by Wibree has not yet been released by NOKIA]. What that means is that for small devices batteries do not need to be changed as often it would have with Bluetooth.

    It also improves the wide range of devices that can now run on radio technology. Small button celled power devices like watches that would otherwise be very difficult to run on Bluetooth if not inoperable, can now be used with Wibree with just about the same features Bluetooth offers.

    2. Another key factor is size. Wibree chips are much smaller than Bluetooth and so for devices where size is of prime importance Wibree would make a better substitute for Bluetooth.

    The Main Disadvantages
    Wibree may be a more power efficient technology and have smaller chip sizes than Bluetooth chips but it has its own draw backs. When it comes to speed of transmission Wibree is relatively slow compared to Bluetooth. While Bluetooth transmits at a speed of 3 Megabits per second(3Mbs), Wibree can only manage 1megabit per second(1Mbs). A really big draw back which makes it difficult to see how Wibree can compete with Bluetooth in devices where bandwidth is of prime importance.

    4. Electronic toys
    5. Sports sensors
    6. Cell Phones
    7. Medical devices, possibly implanted

    Who shall it be?
    It is very difficult to tell which technology shall become the most dominant in the next decade. One thing is clear though Wibree would have to do a lot of work to become a household name as Bluetooth has become.

    With the issue of power consumption which is one of the main reasons why Wibree was developed manufacturers of Bluetooth are working on reducing the amount of power consumed by Bluetooth usage. If they do succeed, well one would wonder where that would leave Wibree.

    I guess time would tell.

  • Mobile Phone Virus

    Virus! Virus!! Virus!!! We have all heard of this expression thousands if not millions of times. Both biological and computer viruses are talked about so many times nowadays. However since this is a computer based article we would only be concerning ourselves with the computer “kind of” viruses. Any computer user would readily admit that he or she has had problems with a computer virus and subsequently might have gone through some hurdles just to deal with it. Others have probably had a much more serious experience with the many kinds of viruses, Trojans, worms and the like.

    Many of these viruses spread on computers that run on Windows. Other Operating systems like Linux have virtually no problems with viruses. Why? You may ask. Linux is not exactly a very popular operating system even though it is free, as it commands a very low percentage of the market. Windows however is by far the most popular OS there is on the market. This has attracted a lot of people and more important in our case Virus writers’. This means that if people dedicate their time to writing viruses for the Linux distributions it would work.

    Enough of the computer viruses. Let us now focus our attention to the main topic of this article, Mobile Phone Viruses. What is a mobile phone virus? Well, like a computer virus a mobile phone virus is a piece of program that is written with the intention of causing harm to a mobile phone. The various ways that a computer virus can cause havoc is just the same over here. Most of you probably know how a computer virus/Trojans causes harm to a computer but I would nevertheless like to enumerate just a few;

    1. Damage files such as word docs and executable files rendering them useless.
    2. Corrupting windows files: This kind of threat can cause so many problems such as making it impossible to logon or even in extreme case even boot a computer. Others disable task manager, the run command, and the folder options in the Tools option of the Menu bar.
    3. Some also cause unnecessary processes to run in turn slowing down the pc.

    Mobile phone viruses also work in a similar way but in their own style and remember the prime objective is to cause havoc.

    The types of Mobile Phone Viruses
    The first mobile phone virus was written as proof of concept i.e. to proof that it was possible for a mobile phone to get infected with a virus and not with any evil intent.

    CABIR: The code for Cabir was first released in June 2004 on the internet and was found to have infected mobile phones in 2005. It was really a harmless virus which spreads via Bluetooth.

    SKULLS, Trojan Horse: This is another type of virus with a more serious infection problem. When this virus infects a phone it renders the phone completely useless. What it does is to disable every feature on your cell phone other than the ability to dial out and receive calls. The picture below shows how a phone looks like after an infection from skulls. This virus was reported in November 2004 and it spreads via internet downloads.

    HOAX: The following is from Symantec.com

    All mobile phone in DIGITAL system can be infected by this virus. If you receive a phone call and your phone display "UNAVAILABLE" on the screen (for most of digital mobile phones with a function to display in-coming call telephone number), DON'T ANSWER THE CALL. END THE CALL IMMEDIATELY!!!BECAUSE IF YOU ANSWER THE CALL, YOUR PHONE WILL BE INFECTED BY THIS VIRUS. This virus will erase all IMIE and IMSI information from both your phone and your SIM card which will make your phone unable to connect with the telephone network. You will have to buy a new phone.

    COMMONWARRIOR: This virus was first discovered in January 2005. It was able to spread through an entire company via Bluetooth. Once it infects your phone it automatically begins to spread itself via any available Bluetooth within range. It also sends itself via MMS to all available contacts on your mobile phone.

    LOCKNUT: First reported in March 2005. It crashes system ROM and disables all phone functions. It spreads via Internet downloads disguising itself as a patch.

    FONTAL: First reported in April 2005.It locks up the phone in startup mode hence disabling the phone entirely. It spreads via Internet downloads.

    All that we have seen above are proof of the fact that mobile phone viruses are really on the rise. Though I must admit that they are really in low proportions and Virus writers would continue to target Windows OS for a very long time to come.

    Who Is At Risk
    Are all phones at risk of infection from a mobile phone virus? The answer is a big NO. Only sophisticated phones i.e. Smart phones are at risk. Just like virus writers target Windows OSes so in the mobile phone world, virus writers also target only popular mobile OSes. The Common ones are:

    1. Symbian OS
    2. Windows Mobile
    3. NTT DocoMo OS

    Ways A Mobile Phone Can be Infected
    There are various ways a Smartphone can be infected with a virus. The Common ways are through:

    1. Bluetooth
    2. MMS
    3. IrDA(Infrared Data Association)
    4. Internet downloads

    How To Protect Your Cell Phone
    1. Be sure to turn your infrared and Bluetooth off in public places. Also be sure you know the source of any data you are receiving by Infrared, Bluetooth and even MMS.
    2. Avoid any automatic internet downloads, disable this feature if possible. Be sure you have verified the authenticity of a website before you download any information from it.
    3. Use a mobile phone antivirus. You can get a free version of a mobile phone antivirus for symbian and Windows mobile OSes from www.trendmicro.com. Other antivirus companies like Kaspersky Lab, F-secure and Symantec also have mobile phone antiviruses.

  • Broad Band-Over-Power line (BPL)

    We shall begin the semester's edition of this article by looking at Broad Band-Over-Power line (BPL). Most of you have probably heard about the various ways that Internet Service Providers (ISP's), provide internet to clients. The speed and efficacy of each service determines its price. Dialup (Modem), Broadband (Cable), VSAT (Satellite), Radio are the most common ones. Well in another term your pocket would determine the kind of service you can afford. But for this article we shall be taking a look at BPL

    What Is BPL
    I bet some of you are wandering what this BPL is. This is a new technology that is yet to catch up. Even in the States it is not so popular and believe me it would probably take years before it gets to Ghana. OK, now let's take a look at BPL in more detail.

    As the name suggests it is a technology that supplies Internet over Power (Electrical) line. Interesting ha. Imagine, how you can surf the internet and do all the things you love to do without the need for a telephone line, cables or any form of satellite or radio connection. All you need to do is just to connect your PC to an electrical outlet anywhere in your house. Yes that is what BPL brings to you and more.

    How to Get BPL?
    Well the first thing would be to get an ISP that supplies such a service. At the moment there is no company in Ghana that supplies such a service. You can call me to inform me if you hear of one and I would be glad to check it out. However this does not mean that it cannot be done. Let's look at how BPL works and then you can judge for yourself the feasibility of its implementation in this country.

    The first and most important thing you need is to connect your house or office to the main power from ECG. This is not really a problem because it's readily available to anyone and everyone. The real deal is the equipment that the ISP uses to adapt and send digital internet data over the power cables. That is not all, in your home or your office more gadgets are used to protect and distribute the data as the current transforms to household levels.

    In this article however we would focus our attention to the home part of this networking. BPL connection at home is slightly different from dial up which uses telephone modem and cable. The only thing is that instead of a modem or cable you would only install a power line modem. The power line modem is plugged into an electrical outlet which is then routed with an Ethernet or usb to a network hub or a PC's LAN port.

    Protection is a vital thing
    Transmitting electricity may not always be the safest thing to do even in this day where electrical appliances have been made safer than ever before. This then means that transmitting digital Internet data over power lines may not also be always safe. A surge protector compatible with BPL is the solution to this. Any ordinary surge protector won't work. With this you can be sure that your transmission would be safe from any dangerous power surges.

    If you are the kind of person who won't spend money on just anything because it's cheap but you would rather look for efficiency and true speed, you are probably asking the question, just how fast is this kind of service? Well just to give you a feel of how fast it is, we can compare it to that of a telephone modem (dial-up) with maximum speeds of up to 3Mbs under Ideal conditions.

    Feasible or not Feasible
    Everything you have read so far makes it feel like it would be a great thing to introduce BPL in Ghana and you are probably wandering just why BPL is not being implemented as an alternate source of communication network. It is not all cozy with this new technology. Let's now take a look at some of the factors that are downplaying this new tech.

    1. COST: from the end user point of view all is quick and easy. However before the ISP can be able to install a BPL, a lot of work would have to be done. By this I mean installing equipments which if you remember would help transmit the digital Internet data over power lines. This is done outside the home and is costly.
    2. BPL, some argue has the capability of interfering with radio signals as well as some emergency radio services. On a power pole tower aerial cables for BPL are thicker and they are not shielded. This means that it has the potential of radiating unwanted frequencies.
    3. Besides the fact that BPL can interfere with other radio services it is also prone to interference itself, just as Wi-Fi is. Simple home appliances such as hair dryers and even light bulbs have the potential of interfering with BPL.
    Despite these few potential problems which off course can be taken care of, there is another area where BPL can be potentially applied as a benefit, a form of side attraction besides its use of providing Internet. This area is of particular interest to me because of its potential of being applied to help solve our energy crises.

    HOW THIS CAN BE DONE
    Simply using BPL the ECG can remotely fix and monitor power outages. Instead of sending personnel to the field to fix unknown problem, BPL can be used to do this from say an office if properly applied.
    Besides this now that we in Ghana are making so much noise about cutting down on the amount of power consumed, BPL can be used to check on people who reduce their power consumption on say peak periods and appropriately reward them with Price Cuts i.e. Making them pay less than usual as an incentive to encourage more people to cut down their power consumption especially at peak periods.

    From the time when video games were first introduced in the 1970’s to this time, it has evolved to become one of the most entertaining and thrilling things to hit the homes and not to forget, a profitable venture for all game manufacturing companies. Video games are enjoyed by a wide range of audience and it really has no age limit, from the 5yr old kid to the grandpapa, almost everyone enjoys it. Nearly everyone has played a video game before.

    And I believe everyone has his favorite. However with the current trends in gaming it is really just too difficult to stick to one game for a long time, especially if you are one of those who fit snugly into the classification of gaming enthusiasts. Now take note of the fact that video games are not the same as computer games. Computer games as the name implies are games played on the computer whereas Video games are played using special gaming systems- things will get clearer as you read on.

    To start of, a walk down gaming history lane should come in handy. .

    A Brief History
    The Facts
    1. In 1971 Nutting Associates introduced the first commercial arcade video game.
    2. In 1972 Magnavox introduced the first home video game system dubbed The Odyssey.
    3. In 1985 Nintendo introduced the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).As a matter of fact the NES was the first gaming system that really revolutionized gaming and set the pace for development of future games.

    A look At the Gaming Systems
    Gaming Systems have come and gone, but which ones are really making news. We shall discuss only two in this issue.

    The Play station 3

    Play station was first introduced in 1994 by SONY. There are currently over 13,000 video game titles available worldwide. The Play station is equipped with a special CPU called the Cell Processor. The amazing thing about this processor is that it has a microprocessor that is made up of 234 million Transistors. One gets a better measure of the power of the cell processor when one compares its specs to those of a dual core Pentium Processor Extreme Edition released in 2005 which has only 200 million transistors. In addition, the Cell Processor has a 3.2 GHz Power PC Core equipped with 512 kb of L2 Cache.

    The Play Station 3 has a special processor dedicated to graphics, called the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU).It’s a 550 MHz, 300 million transistor graphics chip. Again the number of transistors in the GPU is more than the total number of transistors in both the central processing units and the graphics processing units of the three leading current-generation systems, combined.
    What all this means is that the quality of graphics in the Play Station 3 is……. (Judge for yourself). It can actually simulate real life to the minutest detail as never before.

    The Play Station 3 comes in two configurations, the 20GB and the 60GB hard drive models. One more thing that is going to be new with the Play Station 3 is the online gaming service that would be introduced with it. This is a move that the manufacturers, SONY hope to use to maintain their market dominance as they face very tight competition from Microsoft’s XBOX 360 which currently has more than a million subscribers to its online gaming console and also NINTENDO.

    The XBOX 360
    Microsoft released the Xbox 360 in 2005.This is an upgrade of the Xbox which was released in 2001.Many modifications were made in the form of hardware, features and as a matter of fact the new Xbox 360 is far more than a video game console. The Xbox 360 is a total media center that allows users to play, network, rip, stream and download all types of media, including high-definition movies, music, digital pictures and game content.

    Two types of the Xbox 360 was released; the Xbox 360 Premium Package and Xbox 360 Core System. The Xbox 360 Premium Package comes with a wireless controller, an HD AV cable, an Ethernet connectivity cable, a headset and a removable 20-GB hard drive. The Xbox 360 Core System is "plug and play" -- in addition to the console, it includes a wired controller and an AV cable. Unlike the Play station 3 the Xbox 360 has a multi-core processor running three 3.2-GHz PowerPC cores which is made up of only 165 million transistors with 1Mb of L2 Cache.

    The GPU of the Xbox 360 is a 500MHz ATI Graphics processor card with 10MB of embedded DRAM.

    The Xbox 360 currently enjoys tremendous online subscription to its gaming console, the Xbox 360 live, although it still kind of lags behind play station 3 which still holds the market dominance in terms of overall patronage.

    These are some of the cool features of both The Play station 3 and The Xbox 360, the leading gaming consoles on the market. With these games comes a wide variety of games from which to select from. So if you were given the choice between The Play station 3 and The Xbox 360, which would it be?

  • Windows Vista

    Microsoft released its newest version of Windows just a few days ago. It’s been described in very many different ways by the many that have had the opportunity to test it or even use the original product when it was released to the market. You have probably heard a thing or two about its new very cool features. Or better still you have had a first hand experience at using it. After its release , a couple of students including myself who have had a little experience , have already begun using it .

    So the big question now remains what is it that makes this new version of Windows the extra, extra cool Operating System. Before we take a look at the features of Windows Vista let us first look at the various editions available for sale on the market.

    There are four editions of Windows Vista.
    1. Home Premium
    2. Business
    3. Ultimate
    4. Home Basic

    This current version of Windows, Vista requires very high specs before it can run efficiently on any computer. Let’s take a look at the minimum system requirements for any computer.

    Take note that the Home Basic is the most scaled down edition of the Windows Vista Family. This is primarily for systems that cannot meet the high system requirements that come with Windows Vista.

    System Requirements

    Premium Ready
    • A 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor
    • 1 GB of system memory
    • A 40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of free space
    • At least 128 MB of graphics memory

    Basic
    • An 800 MHz or better modern processor
    • 512 MB of system memory
    • A graphics processor that supports DirectX 9
    The Graphic User Interface (GUI)
    Windows Vista runs on a GUI called Windows Aero. This GUI can only be run on all the editions of Windows Vista, except the Home Basic which requires a less intensive GUI. The other editions can also run on the basic GUI.
    Let us now take a look at the Windows Aero GUI.
    Aero’s windows are three dimensional objects that you can move in any direction. Aero Glass makes the borders of each window translucent so you can see the desktop or other windows behind it.
    Vista also replaces the simple, static icons that represent many files in older Windows GUIs with more elaborate Live Icons. Live Icons give you up-to-date thumbnail previews of each file. When you look at a document's Live Icon, you see what the document actually looks like rather than seeing an icon for the program that created it. You can also look at the contents of files before opening them by using the Explorer preview pane.
    Similar thumbnails also replace the icons you see when you use the "alt" and "tab" keys to move through open windows. Aero's more basic version of "alt + tab," called Flip, lets you choose from 2-D thumbnail previews on a menu bar. Another feature, Flip 3D, lets you choose from three-dimensional, moving thumbnails rather than 2-D images. In addition, if you hover your mouse over items on your taskbar, you'll see 2-D thumbnails of each window instead of text listing the applications and filenames.

    More Features
    Vista now has a side bar which displays mini-applications called Gadgets.

    A new Meeting Place which is a teleconferencing program for small groups of vista users.

    Speech Recognition which allows users to control their computers and create documents using their voices.

    A new mail service which replaces Outlook Express, the Windows Mail for home users.

    An interactive Windows Calendar Application for home users.

    A SuperFetch feature which allows frequently used applications to be loaded into memory so they can start up faster.

    The ReadyBoost feature which allows users to add RAM to their system with a USB thumb drive.

    A Self-healing technology that can identify problems and fix them as they occur so you can keep pc disruptions at minimum.

    A built-in self diagnostics that look for hardware failures, network problems and slow performance issues so they can be resolved before they affect productivity.

    The new Vista also comes Windows Defender, which automatically safeguards your pc against pop-ups, slow performance and security threats caused by spy ware and other unwanted software’s.

    The new Internet Explorer 7 also comes with improved features that better protects your pc against malware and to better safeguard your data. An example is the anti phishing.

    A new Parental control feature that helps kids use the pc more safely and productively. It has features that can be used to monitor usage, set time limits, set browsing and program control. You can also retrieve detailed activity reports with ease.

    Vista ultimate comes in 35 languages , which means that you can install as many languages as you want on a single pc. The interesting thing about this is that you can switch between languages as easily as you log on and off your pc.

    You are probably thinking of getting your self a computer that runs on Vista right. Well most of these cool features that you just read about are features that Microsoft claims that Vista has. Whether Vista can do all that Microsoft claims it can or not, well I guess time will be the judge of that.
